Police Department History

Mt. Olive was once mostly a farming community. But because of its vast supply of streams, creeks and the lake; businessmen were drawn to the area. Water supply would be later used to work grist mills, distilleries, tanneries, and creameries. “The entire community was rich in iron and other minerals. Forges and wood –fuel iron works abounded. “(Mount Olive Township New Jersey Centennial Historical Journal 1871-1971, pg. 4). A portion of the Morris Canal also ran through the township furthering the benefit of commerce. In the winter, blocks of ice would be cut from the lake, stored in ice houses, and sold to local residents and city folk the year through. The Morris Canal was one of the methods of transport.

With development of the area and a growing population, citizens began to recognize the need for some form of law enforcement. On December 22nd 1859, the Mount Olive Vigilant Society was formed. “The purpose of this group, as stated in their bylaws, was to “secure the thieves, as to regain the horses of the members which may be stolen”. (Mount Olive Township Police-75th Anniversary-1929-2004-Remembering Our Past, pg.1). Shortly thereafter this purpose was expanded upon to include a host of items and animals. By the 1920’s, the number of citizen vigilants had expanded to the point where the township decided to hire its own Constables. They hired two: Harold McLaughlin and his assistant- George Hildebrandt. The town continued to grow, and in 1929 Mount Olive Township, by ordinance, established a police department. Dan Tremitier served as the first Chief of Police. During that time the police department did not have a two way radio. Officers would be alerted to a call when a flag was hung out the municipal building second floor window, or a blue light was on. When officers observed this notification, they had to stop into the municipal building to get the details on their call. It wasn’t until 1941 that the Mount Olive Township Police Department had a two way radio in a police car.

In 1971, the Mount Olive Township Police Department consisted of eight officers, two Detectives, three Sergeants, and a Chief. The force was supplemented by 20 Special Officers. The township was now intersected by state highways. Route 46 ran through the Budd Lake section and Route 206 through Flanders. This, coupled with the work to complete Interstate Route 80 led to multiple ongoing construction projects. Increased accessibility and the availability of large swaths of land in a struggling farming economy led to large residential development projects. Cloverhill, Bennington Estates, Morris Chase and Apartment complexes including Village Green, Kings Village, Eagle Rock Village, Stedwick Village and Oakwood Village were built. In 1979, construction began on the International Trade Zone in Mt. Olive. This accelerated corollary residential and business development.

The 21st Century saw an increase in New Jersey Police Departments looking to further professionalize their agencies by seeking accreditation. This was a means to validate that a police department’s policies and procedures were in keeping with the established best practices in our profession. The Mount Olive Township Police Department initiated the process in 2010. At a New Jersey State Association of Chiefs of Police Accreditation Board Review in Princeton, New Jersey on February 14, 2013; the Mount Olive Police Department received accreditation for meeting all standards. On March 23, 2013; the Mount Olive Township Police Department received a Certificate of Recognition from The Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (C.A.L.E.A.) for “having demonstrated its voluntary commitment to law enforcement proficiency by adhering to a body of standards essential to the protection of the life, health, and safety of the citizens it serves”.

Today, the Mount Olive Township Police Department is a rapidly growing community of approximately 30,000 people. The Township is 33 square miles and is home to the largest natural lake in New Jersey. The Police Department currently has forty nine (49) sworn police officers in four divisions: Patrol, Investigations, Support Services and Communications and Records. Our officers are supported by a staff of three (3) of civilian personnel and six (6) full time Communications Officers. The Mt. Olive Township Police Department is dedicated to professionalism and to providing the highest level of police services to our community.
